Glossary
Below you will find an alphabetical list of terms that appear on this website and relate to the concept of long division.
Chunking method
The chunking method, also called partial quotients method, is a variant of long division. With this method, you solve a partial sum by taking a chunk off each time and work towards the answer step by step.
Dividend
In mathematics, the dividend is the number that is divided during a division. The dividend is therefore the number that you start with, and that you want to divide into smaller, equal parts.
Divisor
The divisor is the number by which you divide another number. The divisor indicates how many equal groups you want to make or how many go into a group. The divisor therefore determines how many pieces you split the dividend into.
Integer division
An integer division (or division with remainder) is a way of dividing where you only count the whole number of times that one number fits into another, without looking at digits after the decimal point. With this division, it is possible that you have a remainder.
Long division
Long division is a calculation method for dividing large numbers step by step. With long division, you systematically divide a larger number by a smaller number.
Partial quotients
The partial quotients method, also called the chunking method, is an alternative to long division. Partial quotients division is about repeated subtraction using handy numbers.
Quotient
The quotient is the result of a division. It tells you how many times the divisor fits into the dividend, or how many equal parts you can make from the dividend.
Remainder
The remainder is the number left after division when the divisor does not fit exactly into the dividend. In other words, if you divide a number and the result is not a whole number, the remainder is the part that cannot be divided evenly.
Times table
A times table (multiplication table) is a series of sums that belong to one number, where that number is multiplied (×) another number. Times tables help you to multiply or divide quickly and easily.
